Chatty Cathy

We have a neighbor. I'll protect his anonymity by calling him "Phil" because he reminds me of Phil Donahue. Now Phil is one of those neighbors where you really want to try to avoid eye contact with him. Once you do, you are trapped. The very second Phil locks eyes on you, the obligatory hand goes up in a friendly gesture followed by the "Hey, how are ya?" After that, your day is screwed....especially if you are in a hurry and you have tons of things to do.

Why, you ask? Because Phil will talk your ear off. He's one of those people that you can talk to once a year and you are all caught up on their life until next year when they talk to you again.

Yesterday, Big A and I made the mistake of making eye contact with Phil. He came over to our yard and started his hour-long mile-a-minute speech about everything. How he went from talking about a garage remodel to grandkids to winning several trophies (all within 2 minutes, mind you)--I am still trying to comprehend.

The conversations are always boring as this one was, and you can NEVER slip a word in no matter what you do. So for most of the time you are either giving an agreeing "mmhmm", or shaking your head in disagreement. I may as well get a bobblehead of myself, flick it and then run away.
